Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

“At RootsGuard, we believe clarity builds trust — here you’ll find honest answers to the most common questions about our products, ingredients, and values.

About RootsGuard

RootsGuard formulas are plant-based at their foundation. Most products in our current range are COSMOS Natural certified by ECOCERT Greenlife, meaning their natural-origin content typically reaches 95–100%. The remaining few percent are usually water structure stabilisers, plant-derived emulsifiers, and naturally-derived preservation ingredients that keep formulas safe and stable for the months they sit on your shelf.

Some of our formulas also include biomimetic actives — molecules identical to those found in nature or in the human skin, produced through clean biotechnology when they deliver stronger results than plant extracts alone. Bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, and skin-identical lipids are common examples.

Plant-based at the foundation. Science-led where it earns its place. Every product page lists the full INCI so you can see exactly what’s inside.

Every RootsGuard product is manufactured by certified cosmetic laboratories operating under internationally recognised Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards and under ISO 22716. Before any product reaches our shop, it must meet the following:

  • Compliance with applicable cosmetic safety regulations, including a cosmetic product safety assessment by a certified safety assessor where required by law in the markets we sell to and following EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009
  • Subject to mandatory cosmetic safety assessment (CPSR) by an EU-certified safety assessor before release
  • Manufactured under ISO 22716 GMP in independent European laboratories with full microbiological, stability, and dermatological testing
  • COSMOS-certified manufacturers following EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009
  • Cruelty-free, with no animal testing at any stage
  • Reviewed against the RootsGuard Clean Standard™ before being added to our range. Products that contain ingredients we do not accept are excluded from our shop.

Our role is curation, transparency, and standards. We select formulations that meet our standard, audit every INCI, and reject any product that does not.

What sets RootsGuard apart isn’t a single ingredient or technology. It’s how every product earns its place in the range.

Curation, not collection. The skincare market is saturated with products that include everything and prove nothing. RootsGuard takes the opposite approach. We review every formula ingredient by ingredient before adding it to our range. If something doesn’t meet our standard for transparency, formulation purity, or skin compatibility, it doesn’t make the cut. Many products we audit never reach our shop.

Plant-based at the foundation. Most products in our current range are COSMOS Natural certified, with naturally-derived preservation systems and plant-based actives. Some formulas also include biomimetic ingredients — molecules identical to those found in nature or in human skin, like bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, and skin-identical lipids. Plant-based at the foundation. Science-led where it earns its place.

Full INCI transparency. Every product page on our site lists the complete ingredient list, including naturally-occurring fragrance components like linalool, limonene, citronellol, and geraniol. You see exactly what’s in the bottle before you buy it.

Many RootsGuard products are certified COSMOS Organic or COSMOS Natural by ECOCERT Greenlife. When a formula includes biomimetic or nature-identical actives that fall outside certification, it is made under the RootsGuard Clean Standard™, which applies even stricter rules for safety and purity.

RootsGuard formulas are designed to meet the highest safety and purity standards — not just to pass a certification checklist.

Both certifications are awarded under the COSMOS standard by ECOCERT Greenlife, following strict rules for safety, sustainability, and banned ingredients.

  • COSMOS Organic requires a minimum level of certified organic ingredients (usually at least 20% in leave-on products), with all other ingredients still meeting COSMOS purity and safety rules.

  • COSMOS Natural follows the same strict standards but doesn’t set a minimum organic percentage, making it suitable when effective natural actives aren’t available in organic form.

Both ensure full transparency, traceability, and compliance with one of the world’s most respected natural cosmetic standards.

ECOCERT Greenlife is one of the world’s most respected independent certification bodies for natural and organic cosmetics. COSMOS Natural is the certification standard maintained by ECOCERT (along with several other European certification bodies), which sets strict rules for what can be called “natural cosmetics” in the European market and beyond.

What COSMOS Natural certifies:

  • Minimum 95–100% naturally-derived ingredients in the final formula
  • No synthetic fragrances, dyes, or perfumes — only natural-origin parfum permitted
  • No parabens, phenoxyethanol, EDTA, formaldehyde-releasers, silicones, PEGs, or sulphates
  • No genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • No animal testing at any stage
  • Transparent supply chain — every ingredient traced and documented
  • Sustainable manufacturing practices — water use, waste, and energy monitored
  • Recyclable or biodegradable packaging where possible

The difference between COSMOS Natural and COSMOS Organic:

  • COSMOS Natural sets strict rules for ingredient purity, but doesn’t require a minimum percentage of certified-organic ingredients.
  • COSMOS Organic requires a minimum of 20% certified organic ingredients in leave-on products, with all other ingredients still meeting the strict purity rules of COSMOS Natural.

Both standards represent serious independent verification. COSMOS Natural is often the most achievable level for high-performance formulas where some active ingredients (like biomimetic peptides or fermented extracts) cannot be certified organic but are produced under strict purity standards.

Why this matters at RootsGuard:

Most products in our current range are COSMOS Natural certified by ECOCERT Greenlife, providing independent verification of ingredient purity, sourcing, and manufacturing practices. We see certification as a starting point — a verified baseline that customers can trust without having to take our word for it.

The RootsGuard Clean Standard™ is our own purity benchmark that goes beyond international certifications. It filters out not only harmful synthetics but also natural ingredients that research shows can irritate or compromise long-term skin health — even if they are allowed in COSMOS products.

Every product page on our website lists the complete INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) list. We believe in 100% ingredient transparency so you can make informed skincare choices.

Most RootsGuard products are formulated to be skin-friendly across a range of skin types, including sensitive skin. To help you choose with confidence, every product page clearly states the skin types and concerns it’s designed for.

That said, every skin is unique. Many of our formulas contain naturally-occurring fragrance components from essential oils, such as linalool, limonene, citronellol, and geraniol, which are fully disclosed on every product page in line with EU labelling rules. While these are part of clean, natural formulations, they can occasionally trigger reactions in highly reactive or rosacea-prone skin.

For very sensitive or reactive skin, we recommend products with the lightest fragrance load — currently the VitalBloom Face Oil for Sensitive Skin, Calm Plus Barrier Repair Moisturiser, and Hydra+ Deep HA Gel. Always review the full ingredient list and perform a patch test before first use, particularly if you have known plant or fragrance allergies.

Every RootsGuard product is crafted in certified European laboratories that operate under strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. This guarantees controlled, hygienic production where quality, safety, and consistency are never left to chance.

After manufacturing, each batch is verified in independent, third-party laboratories within the EU. These tests confirm product stability, microbiological safety, and full compliance with European cosmetic regulations. Only when a formula meets our exacting standards — and proves itself safe and effective — does it earn the right to carry the RootsGuard name and reach your skin.

General Natural Skincare

Natural skincare, when crafted to uncompromising standards, works in true harmony with your skin’s natural biology. The best formulas harness potent plant-based actives, nutrient-rich botanical oils, and bioidentical compounds your skin instantly recognises and can put to use.

But “natural” is not enough on its own. Poorly formulated products, whether natural or synthetic, can still irritate, disrupt, or weaken the skin over time. That’s why the RootsGuard approach is built on radical transparency, based on clinical data ingredient information and safety, and formulations designed to deliver visible results now while protecting skin health for the future.

We believe an informed choice is a powerful choice. That’s why we created the RootsGuard blog — a space where you can deepen your understanding of what truly natural skincare means, learn how to navigate greenwashing, and discover how toxin-free living transforms skin health. Start with our article The Benefits of Toxin-Free Skincare: Why Going Natural Matters to see why purity is more than a trend — it’s a long-term commitment to your skin and your wellbeing.

  • Natural skincare: Contains ingredients sourced from nature with minimal processing, certified by recognised bodies like COSMOS Natural.

  • Organic skincare: Uses ingredients grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, certified by recognised bodies like COSMOS Organic.

  • Clean beauty: A marketing term with no universal definition, but generally refers to products free from certain controversial ingredients.

At RootsGuard, we combine natural, organic, and nature-identical ingredients, which goes beyond these labels by filtering out even some allowed natural ingredients if they pose potential long-term risks or they are just fillers.

Benefits:

  • Free from synthetic preservatives such as parabens and phenoxyethanol, synthetic fragrances, silicones, and petroleum derivatives..
  • Formulated with naturally-derived ingredients that work in harmony with the skin’s own systems.
  • Supports a healthy skin barrier and microbiome, which help maintain skin’s resilience against external stressors.
  • Uses ingredients closer to what your skin naturally recognises, improving compatibility and comfort.
  • Often more sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Can support long-term skin health without reliance on harsh synthetics.

Limitations:

  • Some natural ingredients can still trigger sensitivities.
  • Without proper formulation, natural products may have a shorter shelf life.
  • Results may take longer compared to products using aggressive synthetic actives.

Even natural fragrances — such as essential oils — contain aromatic compounds that can trigger reactions in sensitive skin. Fragrance-free products reduce the risk of irritation and are often better suited for people with allergies, eczema, or reactive skin.
At RootsGuard, we clearly label which products are fragrance-free and ensure we do not use synthetic fragrances. All our fragrance compositions are 100% vegan, carefully curated using natural aromatic substances, with no phosphates or other synthetic preservatives involved.

In truth, nothing is “chemical-free” — even water is a chemical. In skincare, this phrase usually means free from synthetic or petrochemical-derived ingredients. To confirm a product’s claims, always check the full INCI ingredient list and look for recognised certifications such as COSMOS Organic or COSMOS Natural.

RootsGuard provides full ingredient transparency on every product page so you can see exactly what’s in your skincare and make informed choices.

Ingredients & Formulation

Yes. Every RootsGuard product is created which strict exclusion of parabens, microplastics, silicones, mineral oil, and petrochemical derivatives. This is part of our commitment to purity — reducing unnecessary synthetic exposure.

Some RootsGuard products contain plant-derived fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol and cetyl alcohol. Despite the name, these are not drying or irritating — they are wax-like emollients that help stabilise creams, soften their texture, and support a smooth feel on the skin. They behave nothing like the sharp, evaporating alcohols people often think of when they hear the word.

A small number of products in our range also contain ethanol (denatured or naturally fermented), used in toner and gel-based formulations where it helps deliver actives, supports preservation, and gives a fresh, fast-absorbing finish. Where ethanol is included, it is always declared on the INCI by name.

You can check the alcohol content of any RootsGuard product on its individual product page, where the full INCI is listed in plain sight.

In certified natural and organic cosmetics, only natural ethyl alcohol — also called ethanol, food-grade alcohol, pure alcohol, or grain alcohol — is permitted. It is derived from fermented plant sources such as sugarcane, wheat, rye, or corn, and is a very different substance from the harsh synthetic alcohols sometimes used in conventional products.

Alcohol serves several safe, functional roles in natural skincare:

  • Natural preservative – protects formulas from microbial contamination.

  • Solvent – extracts and dissolves botanical actives efficiently.

  • Enhances absorption – helps other beneficial ingredients penetrate the skin more effectively.

  • Quick-drying & residue-free – leaves no heavy film on the skin.

Scientific evidence consistently shows that ethanol in cosmetic concentrations:

  • Does not dry the skin, because it does not cause transepidermal water loss or strip skin of moisture.

  • Has minimal to no irritation potential, even at high concentrations.

  • Does not cause allergic reactions.

  • Evaporates within seconds (half-life ~11.7 seconds), minimising prolonged skin exposure.

  • Is well-studied and accepted under EU cosmetics safety guidelines.

When used within COSMOS and ECOCERT limits, plant-derived alcohol is a safe, effective, and naturally compatible ingredient that helps preserve product freshness, stability, and performance — without compromising skin health.

In certified natural and organic cosmetics, alcohol can serve several safe, functional purposes:

  • As a natural preservative to help prevent microbial growth.

  • As a solvent to dissolve botanical extracts.

  • To improve skin absorption of certain active ingredients.

When used within strict COSMOS and ECOCERT limits, alcohol is considered safe and is often derived from natural plant sources such as sugar cane or grains.

Some natural ingredients, especially essential oils, contain naturally occurring allergens such as  Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol, and Eugenol. When present above legal thresholds, these must be clearly listed on the product label by EU regulation. RootsGuard always discloses any potential allergens in the full INCI list so you can make informed choices for your skin.

Ascorbyl Palmitate is a stable, oil-soluble form of Vitamin C. In RootsGuard products, it acts as an antioxidant to protect skin from free radical damage, support collagen integrity, and help maintain product freshness by reducing oxidation. It is gentler than pure ascorbic acid, making it suitable for most skin types.

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful skincare actives, but it exists in many different molecular forms. Each form has different stability, absorption, and effects on the skin. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right product.

Pure ascorbic acid (L-ascorbic acid) is the most direct, most studied form of vitamin C. It works at low pH, delivers strong antioxidant and brightening effects, but is highly unstable, oxidises quickly, and can be irritating to sensitive skin.

Ascorbyl glucoside is a stable, water-soluble derivative of vitamin C made by attaching a glucose molecule to ascorbic acid. Once on the skin, enzymes gradually convert it back into active vitamin C. This makes it gentler, more stable in formulas, and well-tolerated by sensitive skin types — while still delivering antioxidant and brightening benefits over time.

Ascorbyl palmitate is an oil-soluble form of vitamin C. It is highly stable in oil-based formulas where pure ascorbic acid would degrade. Its primary role is as an antioxidant: it protects oils, plant extracts, and other actives from oxidation, while also delivering some skin benefits over time.

RootsGuard products with vitamin C:

  • C+ Glow Booster Serum — features Ascorbyl Glucoside as a stable, gentle vitamin C form for daily brightening, paired with ferulic acid for amplified antioxidant effect
  • Many of our products — including Velour Rich Cream, Replenish+ Ceramide Night Cream, Firm+ Eye Cream, and the entire range — contain Ascorbyl Palmitate as an antioxidant to protect the formula and support skin defense

For a daily-friendly, sensitive-skin-compatible vitamin C, the C+ Glow Booster Serum is our recommended starting point.

RootsGuard avoids the use of palm oil wherever possible. If a functional ingredient is only available in a palm-derived form, it is sourced exclusively from certified sustainable supply chains that meet RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) or equivalent standards. Full disclosure is always given in the INCI list.

Most RootsGuard products are vegan-friendly, meaning they contain no animal-derived ingredients. If a product contains natural bee-derived materials such as beeswax or propolis, this will be clearly stated on the label and product page so you can choose according to your preferences.

Preservatives are essential in any skincare product that contains water — without them, formulas would grow mould, yeast, and bacteria within days. The question is not whether to preserve a formula, but how.

In conventional skincare, preservation often relies on synthetic systems like phenoxyethanol, parabens, or formaldehyde-releasers. In natural and certified clean skincare, the preservation systems shift to plant-derived and naturally-occurring molecules that do the same job.

Across the RootsGuard range, the preservation work is done by ingredients such as:

  • Pentylene glycol and propanediol — plant-derived (typically from corn or sugarcane fermentation) that support antimicrobial protection while keeping the formula light
  • Glyceryl caprylate — a plant-derived ingredient (coconut/palm) that contributes to preservation while softening the skin
  • Phenethyl alcohol — naturally occurring in rose and geranium essential oils, used in some formulas as a co-preservative
  • Sodium phytate — a plant-derived chelator (from rice bran) that protects formulas from oxidation
  • Tocopherol and ascorbyl palmitate — vitamin E and a stable form of vitamin C, used to protect oils and active ingredients from going rancid
  • Lactic acid — naturally fermented, helps maintain a skin-friendly pH that itself supports preservation

You can review the full preservation system of any RootsGuard product on its individual product page, where the complete INCI is listed.

Even natural ingredients can trigger reactions in sensitive skin. Common triggers include certain essential oils (e.g., cinnamon, clove, peppermint), strong plant acids, or high concentrations of botanical extracts. At RootsGuard, all potential allergens are clearly disclosed in the full INCI list, and our range includes options designed for sensitive and reactive skin types.

There are many beneficial natural ingredients for skin health, some of the most proven, high-performance plant-based actives include:

  • Bakuchiol – plant-based retinol alternative.

  • Centella asiatica – supports skin repair and calms inflammation.

  • Green tea extract – rich in antioxidants to fight free radicals.

  • Spilanthes acmella – helps firm and smooth the skin’s surface.

  • Rosehip oil – nourishes and improves skin elasticity.

  • Aloe vera – hydrates and soothes sensitive skin.

RootsGuard integrates these and other clinically supported botanicals into targeted formulations for visible, long-term results.

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived molecule extracted from the seeds of the Psoralea Corylifolia plant, traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine. In modern skincare, bakuchiol has become widely known as a plant-based retinol alternative because it appears to influence many of the same skin renewal pathways as retinol, but through a different molecular structure.

A 2018 clinical study published in the British Journal of Dermatology compared bakuchiol with retinol over 12 weeks of use. Both ingredients showed comparable improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation. Bakuchiol users reported significantly less irritation, dryness, and stinging.

Why this matters for skincare:

  • Retinol is well-known for results, but it can cause redness, dryness, peeling, and sun sensitivity. It’s also not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Bakuchiol delivers similar visible benefits (smoother texture, improved firmness, reduced appearance of fine lines, more even tone) without the same irritation profile.
  • Bakuchiol is photostable, which means it can be used during the day without breaking down in sunlight.
  • It pairs well with vitamin C, niacinamide, and other actives that traditional retinol can clash with.

RootsGuard’s bakuchiol product:

Radiance+ Botanical Retinol Oil features bakuchiol blended with rosehip oil, evening primrose, jojoba, and antioxidant-rich raspberry, strawberry, and blueberry seed oils. The formula is gentle enough for sensitive skin while delivering visible renewal support.

For best results, apply a few drops in the evening 2–3 nights per week initially, increasing as your skin adjusts. As with any active, patch test before first use.

Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are both forms of the same molecule, but they behave differently on the skin. Both are skin-identical, meaning they are naturally produced by the human body and recognised by the skin without rejection.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has a larger molecular weight. It sits on the surface of the skin where it draws moisture from the air and forms a hydrating film. This creates the “plump” effect you feel right after application.

Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, with a smaller molecular weight. Its smaller size allows it to penetrate deeper into the upper layers of skin, providing hydration from within rather than only on the surface.

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is even smaller, breaking down hyaluronic acid into very low molecular weight fragments that reach deeper still.

Why combining all three matters:

The most effective hydration formulas use multiple molecular weights simultaneously. Surface hydration plumps and smooths immediately. Mid-depth hydration supports lasting comfort. Deep hydration builds skin reservoirs that benefit the skin over time.

RootsGuard products with multi-weight hyaluronic acid:

  • Hydra+ Deep HA Gel — combines hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate for layered hydration
  • Multiple serums and creams in our range — including Botanical Brightening Serum, Pigment Clarity Serum, Firm+ Reverse Day Cream, and Firm+ Eye Cream — incorporate both molecular weights for plumping and lasting hydration

To check the exact hyaluronic acid forms in any product, the full INCI is listed on every product page.

Alpha-arbutin is a naturally-derived molecule that gently inhibits melanin production in the skin, helping to fade dark spots, post-acne marks, and uneven tone over time. It is widely used as a modern alternative to hydroquinone, the older spot-fading ingredient that has been associated with several concerns.

Why alpha-arbutin is preferred in clean skincare:

  • Hydroquinone is restricted or banned in cosmetics in many countries (including the EU as an over-the-counter cosmetic ingredient) due to safety concerns with long-term use.
  • Alpha-arbutin is derived from natural sources including bearberry leaves, and is recognised as gentle and well-tolerated.
  • Effective for melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, and sun spots without the same side-effect profile.
  • Safe for daily use, suitable for most skin types, and pairs well with vitamin C, niacinamide, and exfoliating acids.

Realistic expectations:

Pigmentation correction takes time. Most users see visible improvement after 4–8 weeks of consistent use, with continuing improvement over 3–6 months. Daily SPF protection is essential — without sun protection, dark spots will reform faster than any active can fade them.

RootsGuard products for pigmentation:

  • Pigment Clarity Serum — our hero pigmentation product, featuring alpha-arbutin combined with lactic acid (gentle exfoliation), Bidens Pilosa (botanical retinol alternative), and Ascophyllum Nodosum (marine extract). Designed to fade dark spots and even skin tone gently.
  • Kojic Acid Dark Spot Cream — features kojic acid (another naturally-derived spot-fader) for stubborn or localised dark spots, ideal as a targeted spot treatment.

For best results, layer Pigment Clarity Serum across the face and use Kojic Acid Dark Spot Cream as a localised treatment where needed.

Rosacea-prone skin is highly reactive, with a compromised skin barrier and easily triggered flushing or visible redness. Even ingredients considered “natural” or “gentle” can trigger flare-ups in rosacea. Knowing what to avoid is as important as knowing what to use.

Ingredients commonly known to trigger rosacea flares:

  • High-concentration essential oils — especially cinnamon, peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus oils, clove, and rosemary. Even gentler oils like lavender can trigger reactions in highly reactive skin.
  • Synthetic fragrances and perfume blends — known triggers across most rosacea-prone skin types.
  • Alcohol-heavy formulas — particularly toners and gels with denatured alcohol or ethanol as a main ingredient.
  • Strong exfoliating acids — high-percentage glycolic acid, lactic acid above 5%, salicylic acid in concentrated form. AHAs and BHAs in low concentrations may be tolerated, but require careful introduction.
  • Retinol and synthetic retinoids — typically too active for rosacea-prone skin without dermatological supervision.
  • Menthol, camphor, and witch hazel — common in oily-skin products, but problematic for reactive skin.
  • Sulphates (SLS, SLES) — barrier-disrupting, will worsen rosacea.
  • Drying clay masks and aggressive scrubs — strip natural oils and trigger redness.
  • Hot water — not an ingredient, but worth mentioning. Always cleanse with lukewarm water.

What helps rosacea-prone skin:

  • Barrier-supporting ingredients — ceramides, plant-derived lipids, panthenol, beta-glucan
  • Anti-redness botanicals — Centella asiatica, niacinamide, bisabolol, allantoin
  • Gentle hydration — multi-weight hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sodium PCA
  • Soothing extracts — chamomile (carefully), aloe vera, oat extract

RootsGuard products that may suit rosacea-prone skin:

  • Calm Plus Barrier Repair Moisturiser — designed around aloe, jojoba, plant-derived ceramide-supporting lipids, and barrier minerals (Sodium PCA, Hyaluronic Acid). One of our gentlest formulas with minimal essential oil content.
  • Hydra+ Deep HA Gel — lightweight hydration with white tea, sage, and multi-weight hyaluronic acid. Minimal essential oil load.

Always patch test new products behind the ear or on the inner forearm for at least 72 hours before applying to the face. For active rosacea flares, consult a dermatologist — topical skincare alone may not be sufficient.

Many of our products contain natural-origin parfum, derived from essential oils and botanical extracts rather than synthetic fragrance compounds. These naturally-occurring aromatic components include molecules such as linalool (found in lavender), limonene (found in citrus peels), citronellol (found in geranium and rose), geraniol (found in rose and palmarosa), and others.

Why these are listed separately on the INCI:

EU cosmetics regulation requires that 26 specific aromatic compounds must be declared individually on the product label whenever they exceed certain concentration thresholds — even when they come from completely natural sources. This rule exists to give consumers clear information about potential fragrance allergens, regardless of whether the source is natural or synthetic.

What this transparency tells you:

  • The product is using natural, plant-derived fragrance — not synthetic perfume blends
  • The brand is following strict EU labelling rules, providing full disclosure
  • You can identify any compounds you may be sensitive to before buying

Why some brands hide these:

Some brands list “Parfum” or “Fragrance” as a single ingredient, leaving the breakdown unclear. RootsGuard lists every disclosed component on every product page so you have complete visibility.

For sensitive skin:

If you have known fragrance allergies or highly reactive skin, look for our products with the lightest fragrance load — currently Hydra+ Deep HA Geland Calm Plus Barrier Repair Moisturiser. Always patch test before first use.

The full INCI list on every product page lets you check exactly what is in each formula.

Usage & Routines

Choosing the right product matters, and we want to help you get it right.

  • Life chat on the website for quick conversations and direct product suggestions
  • The Contact Us form on our website, where skincare enquiries are prioritised
  • Email at su*****@********rd.com

Your skin matters to us, and choosing well matters more than choosing fast. We’re happy to help you find the right fit.

Results vary depending on the product, your skin type, and your current routine. Some formulas, such as hydrating gels and soothing creams, may show benefits within days. Others, like anti-aging treatments or pigment-balancing serums, may take 6-12 weeks of consistent use. Our focus is on long-term skin health as well as visible results, so benefits often continue to improve with ongoing use.

For certain products, you will see a specific time frame for results mentioned on the product page. This means the product has undergone pre-launch research or a consumers efficiency test, and the stated time frame reflects the outcomes observed during that testing.

Also, where a specific time frame is shown on a product page, it reflects results published in cosmetic literature for the actives in that formula or data provided by the manufacturer. Skin response varies between individuals, so the time frame is indicative rather than a guarantee.

The general rule is to layer products from the lightest to richest texture, giving each step a moment to absorb before applying the next. This ensures lighter formulas reach the skin first while richer ones seal in hydration and active ingredients on top.

A typical RootsGuard layering order looks like this:

  1. Cleanse to start with a fresh canvas
  2. Toner or essence (optional) for an extra hydration or refining step
  3. Hydrating gel or water-based serum like Hydra+ Deep HA Gel
  4. Targeted treatment serum for specific concerns, such as Botanical Brightening Serum, Pigment Clarity Serum, or C+ Glow Booster Serum
  5. Moisturiser or day/night cream to hydrate and support the skin barrier
  6. Eye cream patted gently around the eye area
  7. Facial oil (optional) to seal in everything underneath
  8. Sun protection in the morning as the final step — broad-spectrum SPF is essential to protect the skin from UV damage

A few practical layering tips:

  • Wait 30–60 seconds between layers to give each formula time to absorb
  • Avoid mixing strong actives (such as retinol alternatives with vitamin C or AHA acids) on the same evening unless your skin tolerates it well
  • Listen to your skin — texture, climate, and sensitivity may shift the order or remove a step entirely

Yes, as long as the ingredients are compatible and not duplicating strong actives (e.g., avoid using multiple exfoliating acids at the same time). Always check the ingredient lists and introduce new combinations slowly to monitor your skin’s response.

Apply a small amount of the product to a discreet area, such as behind the ear or inside the forearm. Leave it on for 24 hours and observe for any redness, itching, or discomfort. If no reaction occurs, it’s generally safe to use on your face.

Most natural masks can be used 1–2 times per week, while gentle exfoliating scrubs are best kept to once a week for sensitive skin or twice a week for normal to oily skin. Over-exfoliating, even with natural products, can weaken the skin barrier.

Yes. Natural skincare can complement your current regimen, but introduce new products gradually to ensure compatibility. If you’re using strong actives from conventional skincare (like prescription retinoids), space their use apart from certain natural treatments to avoid irritation.

Specific Skin Concerns

Yes, but only when the formulation is right. The word “natural” alone doesn’t guarantee a product will help acne, and some natural ingredients can actually make breakouts worse. The real question is which ingredients are in the formula, at what concentrations, and how the formula behaves on oil-prone skin.

What works against acne and breakouts

The plant-based and naturally-derived actives best supported by published cosmetic science for acne-prone skin include:

  • Salicylic acid (BHA) — naturally found in willow bark and wintergreen, exfoliates inside the pore to clear congestion and reduce blackheads. The most effective single active for clogged pores.
  • Zinc PCA — a mineral-amino acid complex that helps regulate sebum production and supports skin clarity for oily skin types.
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — supports oil balance, reduces the appearance of pores, and calms inflammation.
  • Bisabolol — derived from chamomile, soothes irritated, breakout-prone skin and supports recovery.
  • Watercress, blackberry, and rowan extracts — antioxidant-rich botanicals that help protect skin from oxidative stress that contributes to breakouts.
  • White tea and sage extracts — provide antioxidant and microbiome-balancing support.
  • Aloe vera — calms active breakouts and provides hydration without heaviness.

What to avoid in plant-based formulas

Not every natural ingredient is acne-friendly. Coconut oil, cocoa butter, and certain heavy plant butters can clog pores and trigger breakouts in oil-prone skin. Heavy waxes, mineral oil derivatives, and high-concentration essential oils may also worsen breakouts in some individuals.

The key is to read the full INCI list rather than rely on front-label claims, and to choose formulas designed specifically for oily, combination, or breakout-prone skin.

RootsGuard products that support oily and breakout-prone skin

While we don’t currently offer dedicated acne-treatment creams, our range includes formulas that genuinely support oily, congested, or breakout-prone skin through balanced hydration, sebum control, and barrier care:

  • Purifying Toner with Salicylic Acid — a toner formulated with naturally-derived salicylic acid (BHA) and lavender water to help clear pores, refine texture, and refresh oily skin. Apply after cleansing as a step before serums and moisturisers.
  • Zinc+ Oil-Control Face Gel for Men and Zinc+ Oil-Control Gel-Cream — lightweight, non-greasy formulas built around Zinc PCA and watercress extract that support sebum balance and a refined, mattified finish.
  • Hydra+ Deep HA Gel — provides oil-free hydration with hyaluronic acid, white tea, and sage. Hydration matters even for oily skin: skin that feels dry often produces more oil to compensate.
  • Hydra+ Active Face Cream for Men — a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser with watercress, bisabolol, and blackberry extract that supports oily and combination skin without clogging pores.
  • Botanical Brightening Serum — supports clearer-looking skin tone for those dealing with post-breakout marks, with Bidens Pilosa, Lactic Acid, and Rose Myrtle extract.

Building a routine for breakout-prone skin

For active breakouts and oily skin, a simple, balanced routine works better than layering aggressive actives. After cleansing, the Purifying Toner with Salicylic Acid can be used to clear pores, followed by Hydra+ Deep HA Gel for hydration, and a lightweight moisturiser like the Zinc+ Gel-Cream or Hydra+ Active Face Cream. Avoid combining strong actives in the same evening (such as salicylic acid with vitamin C or retinol-alternatives) until you know how your skin tolerates them.

A note on dedicated acne care

Acne-targeted formulas built around higher concentrations of actives like azelaic acid and BHA are part of our development pipeline. Until they’re available, the products listed above offer real, balanced support for oily and breakout-prone skin, helping maintain a clearer complexion through hydration, sebum control, and barrier care.

For severe, persistent, or cystic acne, we recommend consulting a dermatologist alongside any topical skincare routine.

Yes, many natural actives have strong clinical backing for visible anti-aging benefits. Plant-based retinol alternatives like bakuchiol, collagen-supporting peptides, and antioxidants such as astaxanthin, licorice, and green tea extract can help smooth the look of fine lines, improve the appearance of firmness, and support skin’s natural resilience over time.

At RootsGuard, our Roots & Restore line represents the pinnacle of this approach. These products are carefully designed around high-performance natural actives, including:

  • Instant Lift & Firm Botanica – combines peptides (Matrixyl 3000™, Argireline®), plant stem cells, and microalgae for a visibly firmer, more sculpted skin look.

  • Regenesis Root Elixir – a concentrated night elixir with bakuchiol, ferulic acid, and botanical peptides to support smoother, renewed-looking skin by morning.

  • Regenesis Root Cream – a daily hydrator enriched with tremella mushroom, ceramides, and coenzyme Q10 to maintain supple, radiant skin and protect against daily stressors.

  • Regenesis Eye Elixir – infused with Eyeseryl®, paracress extract, and Edelweiss stem cells to refresh the delicate eye area and reduce the appearance of puffiness and fine lines.

Together, these formulations form the hero anti-aging system of RootsGuard, designed to be gentle, plant-powered, and effective for long-term skin vitality.

For those seeking an even more complete routine, the Roots & Restore line can be beautifully complemented by the nourishing botanical serums and oils from our Harmony Touch range—such as brightening vitamin C serums or replenishing facial oils—creating a multi-layered regimen that supports skin on every level.

The result is a natural yet high-performance skincare experience that feels both luxurious and purposeful—delivering not just surface beauty, but the deeper sense of care and renewal that RootsGuard stands for.

Essential oils can be beneficial, but they are also potent concentrates that may trigger sensitivity if not carefully diluted. Oils like chamomile, lavender, and frankincense are generally soothing, while others such as citrus or peppermint can be irritating for reactive skin.

⚠️ Sensitive skin rule: Always choose products that use essential oils at safe cosmetic concentrations, and perform a patch test before applying to your face. For highly reactive or rosacea-prone skin, fragrance-free or essential-oil–free options may be the safest choice.

At RootsGuard, we created the Solo Paola line especially for sensitive and youthful skin. This range avoids heavy concentrations of strong actives in its general moisturizers and cleansers, focusing instead on gentle hydration, barrier support, and microbiome balance.

Not always. While natural exfoliators like enzymes (papaya, pumpkin, pineapple) or mild fruit acids are gentler than synthetic scrubs, daily use can still weaken the skin barrier.

Best practice: Limit exfoliation to 2–3 times per week, depending on skin tolerance. Sensitive or dry skin types should exfoliate less often, focusing on hydration and barrier repair.

It depends on the oil. Some oils, like jojoba, squalane, rosehip, and hemp seed oil, are lightweight and mimic skin’s natural sebum — they can balance oil production and even reduce breakouts. Others, like coconut or cocoa butter, have a higher comedogenic rating and may clog pores.

Tip: Always select oils marked as non-comedogenic and suited for your skin type. Oily/acne-prone skin does best with dry, fast-absorbing oils, while mature or dry skin benefits from richer blends.

Pregnancy & Maternity

Natural skincare products are often gentler than synthetic alternatives, but not all natural ingredients are automatically safe for pregnancy. Certain botanicals (like clary sage, rosemary, or high-concentration essential oils) may be too stimulating and should be avoided.

At RootsGuard, we follow the RootsGuard Clean Standard™, which means no parabens, sulfates, PEGs, or questionable synthetics. Most of our products are suitable for pregnancy, but we recommend:

  • Choosing formulas from the Solo Paola line (gentle cleansers, barrier creams, hydration-focused products).

  • Avoiding treatments with high-strength acids or retinoid alternatives unless approved by your doctor.

  • Always performing a patch test and consulting your healthcare provider for peace of mind.

Important: No matter what the label says, it is always best to ask your doctor and do a patch test for any unknown allergies. Every pregnancy is unique, and what is safe for one person may not be suitable for another.

Generally, yes—organic creams without harsh actives or synthetic additives are considered safe. The key is to look for hydrating, soothing, and barrier-supportive ingredients like:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Ceramides
  • Plant-based Hyaluronic Acid

Our Shield Day Cream (Harmony Touch) is an excellent daily moisturizers during pregnancy and breastfeeding because its fragrance-free or lightly botanical, with a focus on hydration and skin barrier defense rather than aggressive actives.

Note: Some treatments, like acne-targeting products (salicylic acid, azelaic acid) and lifting anti-aging formulas (peptides, bakuchiol, caffeine), should be used with extra caution. While many are nature-derived and low-dose, we recommend checking with your healthcare provider before regular use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

The safest way to evaluate products for children is to look beyond the marketing words on the label and check the actual ingredient list. Even natural or organic products can contain strong essential oils, plant extracts, or acids that may be too stimulating for a child’s delicate skin. A few guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Check the INCI list, not just the front label. Words like “natural” or “eco” aren’t regulated and don’t guarantee safety.

  • Avoid irritants. Harsh surfactants (like sulfates), essential oils in high concentrations, alcohols, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, parabens, and dyes are best avoided for children.

  • Stick to simple formulas. The fewer ingredients, the better for fragile skin. Mild plant oils (jojoba, almond, calendula) or butters (shea) are usually safer options.

  • Look for certifications. COSMOS Natural, COSMOS Organic, Ecocert, or Natrue offer extra assurance, but still read the ingredient list yourself.

  • Age-appropriate use. Even if a product is gentle, not all natural actives (like salicylic acid, retinol alternatives, or strong botanicals) are suitable for very young skin.

No matter what a label claims, always do a patch test before first use, and if in doubt, consult a pediatrician or dermatologist. Every child’s skin and health situation is different.

Bakuchiol is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, while traditional retinol (retinoids, retinaldehyde, retinyl palmitate) is typically avoided during these periods due to vitamin A absorption concerns.

This makes bakuchiol one of the few effective plant-based options for expecting and new mothers who want to support skin firmness, fine lines, and tone without the restrictions associated with retinol.

Important guidance:

  • Always consult your healthcare provider before introducing any new active ingredient during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Every pregnancy is different; what is safe for one person may not suit another.
  • Always perform a patch test before first use, as skin sensitivity often increases during pregnancy.
  • Discontinue use immediately if any reaction occurs.

RootsGuard’s bakuchiol option:

Radiance+ Botanical Retinol Oil is bakuchiol-based, free from synthetic retinoids, free from synthetic preservatives, and free from synthetic fragrances. The formula contains bakuchiol blended with organic rosehip, evening primrose, and jojoba oils.

For pregnancy or breastfeeding use, we recommend starting with one application every few nights and discussing the product with your healthcare provider beforehand.

Product Care & Shelf Life

RootsGuard products are crafted without harsh synthetic preservatives, so they are most effective when used fresh. Once opened, we recommend finishing each product within 6 months.

This doesn’t mean the product suddenly becomes unsafe after that time — rather, the potency and skin benefits gradually decline. Think of it like cutting a fresh flower: at first it’s vibrant, aromatic, and full of life, but with time it loses its fragrance and vitality. Natural skincare behaves the same way — the actives are strongest in the first months after opening, and the longer it sits, the fewer nutrients and results your skin receives.

Unopened products stored correctly (cool, dry, away from sunlight) can last up to 12–24 months from the production date, but once opened, it’s best to enjoy them consistently within first 3 month for maximum effect.

Yes. Without synthetic preservatives like parabens, natural skincare formulas rely on plant-based preservation systems such as fermented extracts, organic acids, or botanicals extracted alcohols. These are effective but generally provide a shorter window of freshness. That’s why natural creams, serums, and oils should be used consistently and not left unused for long periods after opening. If a product changes in smell, texture, or color, it’s best to stop using it.

  • Keep them cool: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.

  • Avoid humidity: Don’t leave products open in the bathroom where steam can reduce their stability.

  • Use clean hands or spatulas: To prevent contamination, always use clean fingers or a spatula for creams in jars.

  • Close tightly after each use: Air exposure speeds up oxidation and reduces potency.

  • Optional refrigeration: Some water-based or oil-based serums may benefit from fridge storage, which can extend freshness and provide a cooling effect when applied.

Treat natural skincare like fresh food for your skin — the better you store it, the longer it stays effective.

Brand Ethics & Trust

The most trustworthy natural skincare brands show you the full INCI ingredient list, not just marketing names. Transparency means no hidden “fragrance blends,” no vague labels, and no misleading claims like “100% natural” while sneaking in synthetics. At RootsGuard, every ingredient is listed clearly so you know exactly what touches your skin.

Look for certifications like COSMOS Organic, Ecocert, Soil Association, or NATRUE for product formulations. Vegan and cruelty-free certifications (like Leaping Bunny or Vegan Society) are also strong markers. However, certifications alone aren’t enough — some brands pass minimum standards while still using questionable ingredients. Always read the INCI list for true clarity.

We partner with suppliers who share our standards of purity, transparency, and sustainability. RootsGuard ingredients are chosen for both their scientific efficacy and their heritage use in traditional medicine. Whenever possible, we prioritize organic cultivation, wild-harvesting under ethical practices, and low-impact extraction methods like CO₂ extraction or cold-pressing.

At RootsGuard, we work closely with trusted European-based formulation partners and suppliers who follow strict industry standards for ingredient safety and sustainability. Whenever possible, we prioritize ingredients grown and processed within the EU to ensure reliability and quality. In certain cases, when a plant or extract is traditionally grown outside the EU and its potency is essential to our formula’s performance, we may source it from its region of origin. In those situations, our partners require documentation and certificates that confirm the ingredient’s quality and responsible handling.

We don’t position RootsGuard against other brands. We position it for the customer who reads the back of the bottle.

There are many excellent plant-based and clean beauty brands available today, and the category has grown stronger every year. Within that category, RootsGuard occupies a specific position built on three principles:

Curation, not collection. We review every product ingredient by ingredient before it joins our range. If a formula doesn’t meet our standard for transparency, formulation purity, or skin compatibility, it doesn’t make the cut. Many products we audit never reach our shop.

Plant-based at the foundation. Most products in our current range are COSMOS Natural certified by ECOCERT Greenlife, with naturally-derived preservation and plant-based actives. Some formulas also include biomimetic ingredients — molecules identical to those found in nature or in human skin, like bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, and skin-identical lipids — used where they deliver stronger results than plant extracts alone.

Full INCI transparency. Every product page lists the complete ingredient list, including naturally-occurring fragrance components like linalool, limonene, citronellol, and geraniol that many brands hide behind a single “Parfum” line. You see exactly what’s in the bottle before you buy it.

These three principles guide everything we carry and everything we choose to leave out. The customer who appreciates this approach will recognise it on every product page.

RootsGuard is committed to clarity and honesty in the way we present our products. Every formula lists its full INCI ingredients so you can see exactly what is inside, without hidden fillers or disguised names. We aim to provide as much insight as possible into the origin and quality of our botanicals while also respecting the confidentiality of our partners and suppliers. Our focus is always on proven ingredient integrity and ensuring the safest, most effective formulations for your skin.
