What is the RootsGuard philosophy? Why it exists?
RootsGuard exists because clean skincare deserves more than marketing words.
The clean beauty industry has grown rapidly, and so has the gap between what brands claim and what’s actually inside the bottle. Many products labelled “natural” or “clean” still rely on synthetic preservation systems, undisclosed fragrance blends, or trace amounts of active ingredients that look impressive on the label but do little for the skin.
Our philosophy is simple. Every product we carry must earn its place. We work only with formulas that are plant-based at the foundation, naturally preserved, transparently labelled, and chosen for genuine skin compatibility. Where biomimetic ingredients are used — molecules identical to those found in nature or in human skin — they are included where they deliver stronger, proven results than plant extracts alone.

What are the "RootsGuard Standards"?
The RootsGuard Standards are the principles that guide every product we choose to carry. They sit at the foundation of the RootsGuard Clean Standard™, our publicly published purity benchmark.
1. Plant-based foundation. Most products in our current range are COSMOS Natural certified by ECOCERT Greenlife. Where formulas include biomimetic actives — molecules identical to those found in nature or in human skin — they are used at concentrations chosen for proven skin compatibility and performance. Plant-based at the foundation. Science-led where it earns its place.
2. Naturally-derived preservation. We choose formulas preserved with plant-derived and naturally-occurring ingredients such as Pentylene Glycol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Phenethyl Alcohol (from rose), Sodium Phytate, Tocopherol, and Ascorbyl Palmitate. Synthetic preservation systems like phenoxyethanol and parabens are not part of our range.
3. Skin compatibility first. Every formula in our range is selected with skin sensitivity, barrier support, and microbiome compatibility in mind. We avoid formulas dominated by drying alcohols, harsh sulphates (SLS, SLES), silicones, PEGs, mineral oil, or synthetic fragrance.
4. Transparent labelling. Every product page lists the complete INCI, including naturally-occurring fragrance components like linalool, limonene, citronellol, and geraniol that EU regulation requires us to disclose individually when present above certain thresholds. Many brands hide these behind a single “Parfum” line. We don’t.

Full INCI on every product. Every product page lists the complete ingredient list using the official International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) standard — the same naming used on your physical product label, and the same naming a regulator or dermatologist would use.
Every allergen disclosed. EU regulation requires that 26 specific aromatic compounds — including linalool, limonene, citronellol, geraniol, citral, and others — must be declared individually on the label whenever they exceed certain concentration thresholds, even when they come from natural essential oils. Many brands hide these behind a single “Parfum” line. RootsGuard lists every disclosed component on every product page, so you can identify any compounds you may be sensitive to before buying.
Every ingredient explained. Where space allows, we explain what each ingredient is, its source, and its role in the formula — whether it’s a hero active, a supporting botanical, a preservation system, or a texture component.
No proprietary blends. Our formulas don’t hide actives behind unspecified “complexes” or “blends.” If an ingredient is in the product, it’s named.
No exaggerated origin claims. When a formula contains biomimetic actives — molecules identical to those found in nature or in human skin — we say so. When a product is COSMOS Natural certified, we name the certification body. When something isn’t certified, we don’t claim it is.

How are RootsGuard formulas developed?
RootsGuard works in two ways: through curation and, increasingly, through original development.
For our current range, every product is selected through a rigorous review process.
We work with COSMOS-certified European cosmetic manufacturers operating under ISO 22716 Good Manufacturing Practice. These manufacturers handle the formulation, safety assessment, manufacturing, and quality testing required by EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. We choose from their available formulations the ones that meet our standard.
Our review process examines each formula in detail:
- Full INCI audit. We read every ingredient on every product label. If something doesn’t pass our standard, the product doesn’t join our range. Many products we audit never reach our shop.
- Concentration check. Where active ingredients are listed, we look at where they appear in the INCI order — a simple but reliable signal of whether the active is at functional concentration or trace level.
- Compatibility review. We look at how the formula behaves on different skin types, what the preservation system is, what’s in the fragrance load, and whether the product is suitable for sensitive or reactive skin.
- Allergen disclosure. We confirm that all naturally-occurring fragrance allergens are properly declared, and we list them on every product page so customers can check before purchase.
For our future proprietary range, we are working directly with formulation labs.
Our in-development Root & Restore anti-aging line and our RosacalM+ rosacea-focused formulas are designed in partnership with specialist labs to bring forward formulations that don’t currently exist in the standard supplier catalogue. These products are not yet on sale — they will launch as they pass our standard.
Whether selected or developed, every product on our shop must clear the same review before it carries the RootsGuard name.
Are RootsGuard products COSMOS or Ecocert certified?
Yes — many RootsGuard products are formulated and manufactured in certified facilities according to COSMOS and Ecocert clean beauty standards. We work exclusively with partners who follow strict criteria for ingredient sourcing, natural origin, and safe preservation systems.
Every certified formula reflects our commitment to purity, transparency, and high-performance natural skincare — without greenwashing or compromise.

Does Roots Guard use any artificial fragrances or synthetic preservatives?
No synthetic fragrances. The fragrance components in our formulas come from natural-origin parfum — essential oils and botanical extracts derived from plants such as rose, geranium, citrus peels, lavender, and others. EU cosmetics regulation requires us to disclose any of the 26 specific aromatic compounds (such as linalool, limonene, citronellol, and geraniol) on the product label whenever they exceed certain thresholds, even when they come from natural sources. We list every disclosed component on every product page so you can check before buying.
For preservation, we work with formulas that use plant-derived and naturally-occurring ingredients. The preservation systems across our current range are built around ingredients such as:
- Pentylene Glycol and Propanediol — plant-derived (from corn or sugarcane fermentation), supporting antimicrobial protection while keeping formulas light
- Glyceryl Caprylate — plant-derived from coconut, contributing to preservation while softening the skin
- Phenethyl Alcohol — naturally occurring in rose and geranium essential oils, used in some formulas as a co-preservative
- Sodium Phytate — a plant-derived chelator that protects formulas from oxidation
- Tocopherol and Ascorbyl Palmitate — vitamin E and a stable form of vitamin C, protecting oils and active ingredients from going rancid
- Lactic Acid — naturally fermented, helps maintain a skin-friendly pH that itself supports preservation
Synthetic broad-spectrum preservatives such as parabens and phenoxyethanol are not part of our current range. Some products use additional naturally-derived or COSMOS-permitted preservation ingredients where the formula requires them — every preservation ingredient is listed transparently in the full INCI on each product page.

Does RootsGuard use SLS or any sulfates in its skincare?
No. RootsGuard’s current range is free from SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), ALS (Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate), and all sulfate-based surfactants.
Sulfates are powerful surfactants commonly used in conventional cleansers and shampoos to create a foaming, deeply cleansing effect. While effective at removing dirt and oil, they can also strip the skin’s natural lipids, disrupt the protective acid mantle, and leave the skin barrier feeling dry, tight, or reactive — particularly in sensitive, dry, or rosacea-prone skin types.
